Bonding over the Bar - Womens Powerlifting Workshop in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe powerlifting is alive and well, and growing bigger and stronger every day! In particular, the number of ladies that have taken an interest in lifting has grown exponentially thanks to the community coming together to ensure the sport is accessible for all.
Last week, Coach Audrey from the community of Glen Norah travelled to the community of Mabvuku to host a powerlifting "learn to lift" workshop to kick off the new female only gym. Audrey attended the grand opening of the gym a few weeks prior, and has been influential in ensuring the Lift4Life equipment donation was a success.
The experience and session was nothing but smiles, and was described by Audrey as "surreal". Many of the ladies that attended had never touched a barbell before, and it was a special experience learning how to squat, bench, and deadlift for the first time - skirts and dresses and all. There is nothing like a giggle of joy lifting a weight you never thought you could!
We are incredibly proud of Audrey for sharing her talent in the sport with other ladies, and her initiative to motivate and inspire locals to become involved in the sport. Every since attending Commonwealths in South Africa she has a special powerlifting fire that has been burning wild. Barriers are being broken in the country as girls and boys alike are finding their place within powerlifting.
We are so excited to see all the lifting these ladies will get up to with their new equipment and being equipped with local lifting knowledge. The ladies are already planning to hold lifting sessions to lift together every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The possibilities are endless, and we truly believe one of these ladies could be our next world champion with a little hard training and dedication.
We are so honoured to be a part of the growth of the sport in the country, and so proud of all the people on the ground that are taking initiative to make powerlifting possible. We are looking towards the future to build more gyms like this in Zimbabwe, and welcome you to be involved in our continuous powerlifting journey.
